South Indoor Finals 19 Dec Haselmere

Our boys at long last won through to the EHL Indoor Play off Final on January 30th. at Haselmere by winning the SOUTH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP. Injuries/England call up and sickness depleted the squad to such an extent that Sean Parker played as an attacker throughout the tournament!! The day started poorly with a 3- 3 draw against Banbury, our equaliser coming in the last seconds of the game. Two comfortable wins against Oxford Hawks 5-1 and Fareham 3-1 put us at the top of the group with a game against Indian Gymkhana to go. A win would secure top spot with a semi against Winchester. the Indians played their best game of the day and held us to a 1- 1 draw. This result left us in second place behind Banbury and a semi final against Bromley. 10 minutes each way and 1-1 at half time , we then took a 3-1 lead and looked comfortable for a place in the final. Bromley withdrew their goalie and put a field player on [you can do this at indoor] and forced two penalty corner goals in the last minutes for a 3-3 draw. A penalty stroke barrage of 3 each followed. Ben Lawrence and Steve Haines scored and Bromley only managed 1 with Andy Carney making two fine saves to put us into the final. We met Winchester Wildcats, a young enthusiastic side who play together regularly in the Hants Indoor League. Steve Evans, Steve Haines and Ben Lawrence who had played every minute of every game were exhausted and shattered by this stage. We went 1-0 up 1-1 2-1 up then 2 really sloppy goals from our point of view saw us 3-2 down late in the second half. Steve Haines produced a mazy dribble past three defenders and squared for, you've guessed it, Sean Parker to tap in the equaliser 3-3. So to strokes again. Ben Lawrence had his stroke saved Steve Haines and Steve Evans converted theirs and two were scored by Winchester with the other hitting an upright!! So to sudden death. Steve Haines converted beautifully and Andy Carney made a great save by toeing the Winchester stroke onto the post. A tremendous effort and great credit to Steve Evans our player/coach for his superb organisation of the team and the lads who turned out not having played too much if any indoor hockey before. Squad: Steve Evans, Ben Lawrence, Steve Haines, Tom Nissan, Harwinda Cheima, Paul Schwarz, Sean Parker and Andy Carney.
